![]() As a lifelong democrat and an African American woman, I applaud the accomplishments of black men and women from all walks of life who break barriers. Representative Mia Love is breaking a barrier for future black republicans who, unlike her, will finally be able to publically embrace their African heritage and still be elected by white conservative America- something that is near impossible today. While she contends that race was not a factor in her being elected, she clearly chose a successful political strategy that won an election and made her a first- which I know, from my own firsthand experience, ain’t easy. While I don’t agree with her political position or religious affiliations, I do appreciate the diversity of philosophy among our people. As a black woman who has traversed many difficult paths in order to occupy a place which was not always intended for me, I salute her effort and her win. I look forward to many heated debates with the wonderful, smart, young, African American republican men and women who will follow her and other trailblazers like her. Because she did this, they will be more free to publically embrace their whole selves, and still get elected, regardless of the party. The future is bright. Congratulations, Representative Mia Love and Senator Tim Scott!
