Today
I decided to find
a spark of joy,
a light,
life growing

somewhere.

My typical routine
is to check the news
in the morning
to see
what the world is doing,
what philosophical issues
there are to argue or defend,
who is leading us to where,
what calamity has befallen
someone else
trapped behind my phone screen.

But now, I am presented
with the roulette wheel
announcing the new daily number
of the sick and the dead,
higher than it was
just the day before,
some fatalities obvious, as hospitals
stack the body bags
in freezer trucks
that might have otherwise carried
hamburger or ice cream
just a few days ago.

And we hope

the next number is not our own.
Looking for ways to feel safe,
words and acts of defiance,
a prayer, a glance at someone
we trust to stay -at all costs...

Singing Softly of Prosperity

You know times is hard
when Black folks start talkin’
‘bout they shoes…

Didn’t have no shoes on my feet,
Mah shoes was all runned over on the sides,
Looking like a peacock,
       all dressed up, bad feet.
Scuffed up, no polish,
My feet was on the ground,
I had to walk,
I put newspaper in the soles,
You could feel the wet coming through…

And then I hear myself
singing softly,
...I got shoes…

I'm good.

Unencumbered

Picture
Seaweed washing up where it will,
beautiful unmanicured.
The ocean ships in new growth,
rebirth in waves.

Finally Freedom
from old traps,
low tide so revealing
everything in life
exposed.

When the water returns
I can choose
to hold on to reminders
of old scars
or allow high tide to wash
the slate clean.
Going forward into the next day

unencumbered.

Some life-forms are
designed to wait
patiently through loss and lack
of water,
of sustenance,
exposed to the air

knowing
the tide will return

to take them home.

Where the Tree Was

My attachment to
her strength and her love ran
so much deeper
than I had thought,
even last summer
when life seemed a sunny green
bottomless ocean.

Now there is a void
where the tree was,
and I sit in the rain
and cry, looking up
for branches
to cover me...

A Penthouse View

But when I look back,
way down the road,
I can see the next generation,
and they are strong,
because their backs are not broken,
because we built them a sidewalk,
with the hand rail,
and wide paved roads,
with accurate maps and GPS,...

As it turns out, Everyday is more often than I think.
It is ongoing, to do something Everyday,
every 24 hours, every time you look up,
every time you awake, if you live...

Respite

I watched four young
Black men
playing alone in a small
White hotel pool.
They were clearly
something-teen, twenty tops,
taking a respite
from college and exams,
judgment and assumptions
of a sometimes hostile public,

game face down

Picture
Just when you think
that winter will last
forever,
three yellow flowers show up
in the front yard,
standing together,
looking like sunshine

and hope.

They never doubted
that Spring would return

Bridges Before You

Only those who go
before you understand
the time and cost of
spanning the gap and
wading through rivers,
stepping over sharp rocks,
gathering wood and rope and

steel backbones

to build the bridge
that brought you over
to this place
and takes you forward
to the next
mountain top.

Clear Water

My life is stuffed too full.

Stuff on the bottom mashed
in a corner,
Stuff on top still
looking light and fluffy,
unaware that it too will be reduced
to a compacted weight.
I was trying to empty the jar
but everything was stuck
together inside
folded upon itself...
